GLOSSARY > magma, volcanic

Ubehebe Crater

Maar volcanoes formed by steam and gas explosions around 3,000 years ago created when hot magma reached the water table. Cinders cover much of the surrounding area and can also be found miles away. Near the crater layers of cinder as thick as 150 feet can be observed. The pink and brown mud flat at the bottom of the crater is the site of many short lived lakes.
